  • 1953 | At Home In New Orleans

    Founded in 1953 by L.L. "Doc" Mullins, a Louisiana flavor chemist, Baker Maid began as a bakery supply company serving New Orleans' vibrant food scene. Doc had already made a name for himself through his Dixiana and Barracks Bakeries, but it was his Creole Royal Fruitcake that became his signature creation. As demand grew, Doc put his knowledge of flavor chemistry to work, finding ways to bring his fruitcake to more customers without losing what made it special.

  • 1980sā€“1990s | A Growing Tradition

    Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Doc's grandson, Darryl Sorensen, had his sights set on taking Baker Maid a little further. With the company's fruitcakes and holiday confections already a local favorite, Darryl began bringing them to high-end department stores across the country. Before long, Baker Maid was making its way into homes nationwide, sharing a family tradition with a whole new audience.

  • 2012ā€“2020 | A New Chapter in Cookies & Cake

    Working together, Darryl and his son Greg ushered in a new chapter for Baker Maid. During this period of growth and experimentation, we introduced our Love Cookie brand and expanded into petit fours and undecorated cakes for grocery retailers. These new offerings helped pave the way for Baker Maid's decorated cake program, which launched in 2018, bringing even more sweetness to everyday celebrations across the country.

  • 2021 | Building for the Future

    In 2021, we gave the bakery a little love with a major renovation and freezer addition. The expansion brought more space, updated equipment, and increased production capabilities to support the bakery's continued growth. A lot has changed since Doc first opened his doors, but our dedication to quality and craftsmanship hasn't gone anywhere.

  • Today | A Whole Lot More Than Fruitcake

    More than 70 years later, we're still right here in New Orleans, doing what we love. With four generations of family history behind us and an incredible team keeping things running, Baker Maid has grown quite a bit since Doc's fruitcake days. We've added plenty of new cakes and confections along the way, but we're still proud to call New Orleans home and share a little piece of it with the rest of the country.
