An Exquisite Taste from Old New Orleans
Founded in 1953 by LL "Doc" Mullins, a Louisiana-based flavor chemist, Baker Maid began as a bakery supply company serving New Orleans’ vibrant food scene. With a deep understanding of both ingredients and business, Doc earned a devoted following through his Dixiana and Barracks Bakeries. But it was his Creole Royal Fruitcake that became his hallmark. As demand grew, Doc turned his full attention to Baker Maid, using his background in flavor chemistry to scale production without compromising taste, bringing his signature creation to stores across the city.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Doc’s grandson Darryl Sorensen expanded the brand’s reach, introducing its fruitcakes and holiday confections to high-end department stores nationwide. Now in its fourth generation of family leadership, Baker Maid continues to blend tradition with innovation. In 2015, under the leadership of Darryl’s son Greg Sorensen, the company launched its custom sheet cake program - partnering with grocery retailers to bring high-quality, beautifully crafted cakes to everyday celebrations across the country. In 2021, Baker Maid modernized its operations with a major renovation, ensuring its legacy endures for generations to come.
Today, Darryl and Greg carry forward Baker Maid’s rich heritage, sharing the flavors of Old New Orleans with homes across America.
